HARMONIZING YOUTH JUSTICE: BRINGING NIGERIA'S JUVENILE SYSTEM IN LINE WITH GLOBAL NORMS"

Okonkwo Chika Nwabueze

Abstract

This paper delves into the complex landscape of juvenile justice administration in Nigeria. It provides an in-depth exploration of the historical, legal, and institutional framework governing the treatment of juvenile offenders in the country. By examining domestic legislation, international conventions, and treaties such as the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, Africa Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, and the United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Administration of Juvenile Justice, the paper reveals the substantial efforts made to ensure fair and humane treatment of young offenders. Despite these legal provisions, the practical implementation of juvenile justice in Nigeria has fallen short of its intended ideals. This paper underscores the existing inadequacies within the Nigerian juvenile justice system and suggests areas for improvement, aiming to provide a more effective and equitable means of addressing youth crime.
